
Your GE stove is flashing an error code — F1, F2, F3, F7, F9, or something else — and you do not know whether it means a $50 fix or an $800 problem. GE uses a standardized F-code system across their range, oven, and cooktop lines, but the same code can mean different things depending on whether you have a GE, GE Profile, or GE Café model. Here is what each GE error code actually means, what causes it, and what the repair involves.

F1 is the most common GE error code. It indicates an oven temperature sensor (thermistor) failure or a control board communication error. The oven’s electronic control board constantly reads the temperature sensor — a small probe inside the oven cavity. When the reading goes out of range (typically below -40°F or above 650°F), the board throws F1 and shuts down the oven as a safety measure.
Most likely cause: Failed temperature sensor (70% of cases). The sensor’s resistance drifts out of spec over time. At room temperature, a working GE oven sensor should read approximately 1,080 ohms. If it reads below 900 or above 1,200, it has failed.
Less common cause: Control board failure (30% of cases). The board’s temperature-reading circuit malfunctions, misinterpreting a good sensor’s signal. This is more common on GE Profile and Café models with more complex digital boards.
Repair cost: Temperature sensor replacement: $90 to $150. Control board replacement: $250 to $400. Always test the sensor first — it is the cheaper and more common fix.
F2 means the oven has exceeded its maximum safe temperature. The control board detected a temperature above the programmed limit — typically 650°F in bake mode or 950°F in self-clean mode — and shut down the oven to prevent damage or fire.
Most likely cause: Welded relay on the control board. The relay that controls the oven’s heating element or gas valve has fused shut, causing the oven to heat continuously regardless of the thermostat setting. This is a fire hazard — do not attempt to use the oven until repaired.
Also check: A shorted temperature sensor can send false low-temperature readings, causing the control board to keep heating because it thinks the oven is cold when it is actually overheating. Test the sensor resistance at room temperature (should be 1,080 ohms ± 10%).
Repair cost: Control board with welded relay: $250 to $400. Temperature sensor: $90 to $150. If you get an F2 during self-clean mode, it may be a one-time thermal event — try a power cycle first before assuming a failed component.
F3 indicates an open oven temperature sensor circuit. Unlike F1 (which can mean the sensor is reading out of range), F3 specifically means the control board is getting no signal at all from the sensor — the circuit is broken.
Most likely cause: Disconnected or broken sensor wiring (50%). The two-wire connector between the sensor and the control board has come loose, corroded, or been damaged by heat. Check the connector at the back of the oven — it is accessible by pulling the stove away from the wall.
Also common: Failed sensor with an open internal element (40%). The sensor probe’s internal resistance element has cracked, creating an open circuit. Test with a multimeter — an open sensor reads infinite ohms instead of the expected 1,080 ohms.
Repair cost: Wiring repair: $75 to $120. Sensor replacement: $90 to $150. This is one of the most straightforward GE oven repairs and is almost always worth doing, even on older stoves.
F7 is a stuck function key error. It means one of the buttons on the control panel membrane is registering as continuously pressed. The control board receives a constant signal from one key and displays F7 as a diagnostic flag.
Most likely cause: Failed membrane keypad (80%). The flexible membrane that contains the touch buttons has degraded — a button’s conductive layer is touching continuously. Moisture, heat, and age all contribute. This is especially common on GE stoves in homes without kitchen ventilation hoods, where cooking steam attacks the membrane daily.
Less common: Control board key-reading circuit failure (20%). The board is misinterpreting input from a working keypad.
Repair cost: Membrane keypad: $80 to $180. Control board: $250 to $400. Test by disconnecting the membrane ribbon cable from the control board — if the F7 goes away, the membrane is the culprit.
F9 indicates a door lock failure, most commonly triggered during or after the self-clean cycle. The oven has a motorized or solenoid-operated door lock that engages during self-clean to prevent opening the door at 900°F+ temperatures. F9 means the lock motor ran but the lock switch did not confirm that the door actually locked or unlocked.
Most likely cause: Worn door lock motor assembly (60%). The motor has enough power to try but not enough to fully engage the lock mechanism. Debris in the lock track is also common.
Also check: Door latch switch (25%) — the microswitch that confirms lock position has failed. Wiring harness (15%) — the connector between the lock assembly and the control board has corroded or loosened.
Repair cost: Door lock assembly: $120 to $220. Latch switch: $40 to $80. Note: if the oven is locked shut with food inside, a technician can manually release the lock mechanism — do not try to force the door open, as this bends the hinge and creates a much more expensive oven door repair.
For any GE error code, start with a power cycle: turn off the circuit breaker for 60 seconds, then turn it back on. This clears the error memory and resets the control board. If the error does not return, it was likely a transient glitch caused by a power fluctuation or momentary sensor anomaly. If the error returns within minutes or on the next use, the underlying component has failed and needs repair.
Do not repeatedly reset an F2 code. F2 means overheating — resetting and continuing to use an oven with a welded relay is a fire risk. If F2 comes back after one reset, stop using the oven and call for service.
Not directly, but altitude contributes to the conditions that cause them. At 6,035 feet in Colorado Springs, gas ovens work harder to reach target temperatures because of reduced combustion efficiency. This means the oven igniter fires more frequently and the control board cycles the gas valve more often — both of which accelerate component wear. Homes in Monument and Black Forest above 7,000 feet see even faster wear rates on igniters and thermostats, which are the components behind F1, F2, and F3 codes. A homeowner in Northgate called us with a GE Profile range showing F1 intermittently — it would appear during preheating, then sometimes clear itself. Another company quoted a $380 control board replacement without testing the sensor. Our technician measured the temperature sensor at 1,240 ohms at room temperature — well above the 1,080 ± 10% spec.
