One dead burner on an electric stove is one of the most common appliance problems we see in Colorado Springs homes. It usually comes down to one of three things, and you can test for two of them yourself without any tools.
Step 1: The Swap Test
Coil burners unplug from their socket. Lift the outer edge of the dead burner slightly and pull it straight back out. Take a working burner of the same size and plug it into the dead socket.
- If the working burner heats in the dead socket, the original burner has failed. Replace the coil.
- If the working burner also fails, the socket or switch behind that knob is the problem. That needs a technician.

Step 2: Check the Breaker
Electric ranges use a 240-volt circuit with two breakers. If one leg trips, some burners will fail while others work. If the breaker trips again quickly after reset, the range has a short circuit that needs diagnosis.
Glass and Ceramic Cooktops Are Different
Smooth-top ranges cannot be tested with the swap method. See our guide on glass cooktop repair in Colorado Springs.
