Most stove problems that require a repair visit could have been caught earlier with a basic annual check. Colorado Springs conditions including hard water, high altitude, and wide temperature swings add wear that homeowners in other cities do not deal with.
Gas Stove Annual Checklist
Check the Flame Color
Light every burner and observe the flame. A healthy gas flame is blue with a small inner cone. Yellow or orange flames at 6,035 feet are more common here than at sea level. Read more about yellow flame diagnosis at Colorado Springs altitude.
Count the Clicks to Light
One or two clicks is normal. Five or more is a sign the igniter is weakening. See our guide on signs your stove igniter is failing.
Clean the Burner Ports
Clear each port hole with a paper clip. See the full process in our stove maintenance guide.
Electric Stove Annual Checklist
Test Every Burner or Zone
A zone that takes more than a minute to show heat is showing early signs of element wear.
Inspect the Glass Surface
Check for cracks or chips. If you find one, check our guide on glass cooktop cracks: repair or replace.
For All Stove Types
Test the Oven Temperature
Set the oven to 350 degrees. After 20 minutes, check with an oven thermometer. See our oven not heating guide.
